When the Greeks smoke…

People complain Greece is not leading the standing s in any category in Europe, let alone the world. There it is to shut the mouths of those who claim Greeks cannot lead on anything.

I’m looking forward to see how will the ban be applied in Greece (or should i say if and how?). As it is planned to take place sometime around 2010 from what I read. People have realized (including myself as back in Greece I was passive to this de facto situation) all over the world smoking has no place in our lives, at least not in the lives of those who don’t want to smoke.

Additionally, one could start thinking what is the impact of this “gold medal” for Greece. Cigarette consumption is huuuuuuge and that is much much money around the table. Another thing that comes along is health and the relevant costs, littering the streets and the relevant costs and I can go on and on to many more aspects around smoking.

There should be some respect to both smokers and non-smokers and in Greece we have shown no signs of respect regarding this issue, just as we luck respect for several other things.

Bravo to my home country, Greece!

You forgot the cost of forest fires ;)

Technically, the law against smoking was passed in 2003 except in clubs/bars/restaurants where there are supposed to be non-smoking areas (haha), but enforcement has been lax for lack of another word.

You are very right again Kat, it’s a reaction chain :) towards several directions.

I was referring to the actual ban of smoking and not to the law. I assume you already know and it is well said, the problem in Greece is not the lack of laws but the lack of their application. But to me it’s even more than that, it’s the lack of respect coming from the individual Greek. Respect for anything that seems not to be of our interest. I could elaborate for hours :P
